Michael VanPelt, DMA

Dr. VanPelt, an experienced solo and chamber musician based in Princeton, NJ, has been teaching saxophone and clarinet for more than twenty years, including as saxophone and clarinet faculty at Westminster Conservatory. His students have won numerous competitions and awards and he has had students successfully audition for region and all-state ensembles in three states. His primary teachers include Dr. John Sampen, Dr. James Bunte, and Rick VanMatre. He holds degrees from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (BM, DMA with a cognate in music theory) and Bowling Green State University (MM).

Saxophone & clarinet
I accept students of all ages, from beginners to adults. Lessons include fundamentals/scales as well as level-appropriate repertoire.
Music theory
I teach analysis techniques for music of all styles, from the Baroque to post-tonal. I also coach students in aural skills (sight singing and dictation) for exams including AP music theory.
Formerly of Westminster Conservatory? I taught saxophone and clarinet at Westminster Conservatory from 2014 to 2022, before its band and orchestral instrument programs were discontinued. While the conservatory is no longer in Princeton, my home studio is still available and located close by in Kingston off of Academy St.
